Swimming with the whales in Tonga is a matter of timing. The humpbacks are on a schedule. You are on a schedule. The people that take the tours out to swim with the humpbacks are on a schedule. The tour companies often book many months in advance.
We lucked out. Cindy was able to get us a canceled spot with one of the tour companies. We had an amazing time being able to swim with these magnificent creatures.
Eight people are allowed per boat. Only four guests in the water at the same time. We were able to swim with the whales two or three times and saw a mama whale about 15 m and her baby. It seems funny to call the calf a baby because it was probably at least 10 meters.
They call the experience a “once in a lifetime” swim.
